Incidentally, the 20-minute extended Hong Kong action sequence is just pure awesomeness. Excellent choice by del Toro to set it in Hong Kong, the human resistance's last outpost, with the battle scenes lit by florescent neon in the rain. The action scenes are intense, creative, and more importantly, coherent. Not since Superman "saved" Metropolis in Man of Steel has there been these spectacular city-wide destruction seen at the cinemas. And it delivers that in spades.Īs a child growing up watching mecha animes in the 70s and 80s, Pacific Rim is a treat for the eyes. Besides, you're not here for the story but for robot-monster mayhem. And as long as you don't dwell too much into it and just accept it, you'll be fine. The film immediately gives you the parameters and the reasons behind building a Jaeger, on why it needs at least two persons to control it, etc. The film has also its fair share of movie cliches and tropes, ranging from Top Gun to Independence Day but the delivery is so sincere and polished and the story is so immersive that you don't mind it at all. Mankind fights back and created giant manned robots called Jaegers to combat these planet extinction threats. Enormous monsters called Kaijus emerge from the seas from an inter-dimensional portal and start destroying cities. The plot is fairly thin and so is the character development. And for that, my inner 10 year-old can't thank him enough. Del Toro had the balls and vision to create a sci-fi world filled with wonder and awe, where skyscraper-high robots and terrifying colossal monsters duke it out for the fate of humanity. Two years later, not only has Pacific Rim exceeded those high expectations, it's arguably the best giant monster movie ever made.
